Where to stay in Cappadocia

Cappadocia, the whimsical land, is definitely on many people’s bucket list. And it sure is in mine. Been to Turkey before, but this time, finally I went there. While planning, there I found that there are 2 towns to stay at; Urgup & Goreme. And after reading many stories, Goreme was chosen.

To get to Goreme, there are options to take the bus or the plane. But since the bus takes many hours & i just got off a long-haul flight, a short flight from Istanbul is the way for me. I took Turkish Airlines, which is very affordable (and during that short flight, they even serve hot sandwich. And it was delish – bread, tomato, cheese, & pesto. The best!). I arrived at Nevsehir airport, which is actually around 40 minutes away from Goreme. After picking up my luggage, the airport transfer buses are already lined up. Only need to keep an eye on which one is holding my name. The bus will make several stops to different hotels around town, and thankfully mine was the third.

Of course when in Goreme, stay in one of the many cave hotels. The hotels are build into existing rock formations but still fully equipped. The hotel that I stayed in was The Cappadocia cave Land Hotel. It’s a petit hotel with al fresco vibes & rooftop dining. The hotel has 3 levels with double & family rooms. The hotel manager happens to be a hot air balloon pilot & do tours very early in the morning. The hotel is also located on a hill which gives great viewing access to the city as well as the parade of hot air balloons in the morning.

As for dining, there are many options. Starting from traditional Turkish food, to organic food, to chinese & korean restaurants. Just need to stroll around and take a pick. One of the place that was such a hidden gem is Omurca Art Cafe. It is in the downtown area but slightly secluded. You won’t notice it at first, because it simply looks like a house. The cafe is located on the second floor, with knick knacks all around. It is eclectic yet cozy in the same time. The owner, who you will definitely meet there, is very welcoming. He also build the cafe by himself. He’s also a cat lover, so you will see cats all around. Which is a good thing. He serves local food with great Turkish coffee. A great place to unwind and escape from the heat of the day.
